From the beginning of the day till the end of it, starting with a cup of tea and sometimes ends with a smile, definitely there are lots of shades of woman, one can think about. Women since the ancient period are respected and known for their morality, hard work, and charm of course. If we talk about women and their achievements it would take more than pages and ink one has got. If we look back in the 1920s women had gained many respect and power through their freedom and rights.
The equal right amendment was passed in 1923 which gave women and men same rights by the U.S. Government. If we are discussing about women empowerment it is important to mention that after a huge world expo in 1923 held in Chicago, women started to be praised by more and more people. It’s because of empowerment that they started dressing with more confidence and became a public orator too.
#Politician and former British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher Nicknamed the “Iron Lady,” Thatcher served as the prime minister of England from 1979 to 1990 is one of the most concrete example of women empowerment.
The society was so rigid with their rules when it comes to the name Women. Their thoughts were limited about them, but after 20s amendment women were no longer seen as homemakers. Same goes with the democratic country India where 19th century was the period that has seen majority of women issues came under the spotlight. However the situations of 1920s in India were not suitable for women.
Bad practices like; Parda system and Sati system were at their elevation. Hence to stabilize their identity as an individual among male hierarchy, women fought many fights and went through many torture and revolutions but they empowered themselves to be finest competitor in the current era.
But honestly are they really empowered? Are they literally getting rid of all these terrible practices? Answer is no, not really. The old devil has now worn a mask of a new monster with the globalization & modernization of the world & the society respectively.
And repercussion of this mentality has been seen easily from top headlines of the newspaper to the narrow streets of the least popular towns.
“Rape Cases” are always hit the chart among the list of heinous crimes towards women. According to the survey of U.S. Government at an average of every 6.2 minutes a woman is raped, apart from this in India in every 30 minutes a woman is raped. These are some statistical analysis of the modern society and its mentality showing in large figures of “Atrocities on woman”.
Abduction and eve-teasing are the second most frequent cases come in the list of atrocities towards woman. Working women at the night sifts especially in B.P.O. & private job sectors or in MNCs mostly becomes the victims of such crimes. These woman are considered as the most educated & independent part of society, but still they are fighting for their respect and dignity. Not only women who are working but also girls who are studying in colleges or schools have been molested many times. If you ask girls and woman about molestation you will get so many different opinions, the reason behind these various answers are the types of molestation they feel.
A college and school girl usually deals with the problem of ‘stalking’. A stalker chases them from their college or may be from some narrow streets to their way home, sometimes they get harassed too. ‘Eve teasing’ is somehow associated with stalking activities and sometimes it further leads to a serious crime like ‘Acid throwing’. Whereas working woman deals with some annoying taunts and comments about their dressing and even about their physical appearances some times. So whether they describe it differently they face and deal with the same problems.
Most shameful fact attached to molestation is, 50% of cases take place into the public, all would become spectator to this and no one could ever speak against these molesters.
Not only molestation and physical abuses but also, mental harassment of woman should be considered as most dangerous activities. Mental harassment are like ‘Calling names in public’, ‘Making ridicule about woman’s body parts’ and forcefully imposing of decisions are also considered as atrocities.
Can we say that there may be issues for unmarried woman but married woman are having dignified life? No we cannot.
We are living in 21st century and atrocities that woman deals with are now getting new faces, some of them come under light and some might not. The problem of domestic violence with woman is one of them. It’s one of the problems that lead to other dangerous atrocities on women that sometimes lead to death also. Domestic violence takes place when a woman is harassed physically and mentally by someone whom she can trust the most. Woman in India gets abused by their own husband and in-laws only for money (Dowry system) and saddest part are it leads to the death of #women. Dowry deaths are found in Australia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran. India reports the highest total number of dowry deaths with 8,391 such deaths reported in 2010, 1.4 deaths per 100,000 women. Deaths are so violent that shows we are living in a menstrual society with corrupt systems where woman has to burn her body just because of an effort to extort an increased dowry. Although dowry systems are now illegal but statistical data are saying some hidden truths. Married woman also faces atrocity named ‘Spousal abuse’ also known as ‘Intimate partner violence (IPV)’ where they get abused mentally and physically by their husband. Woman gets beaten and forcefully raped by her own husband because of the rigid and ethical beliefs of marriage.
How a woman is going to fight against the norms and the rigid rules which are made by society of male hierarchy? The answer is they can if they started once. There are no hidden secrets of avoiding or getting rid of molestation, harassment, rape, domestic and spousal abuse and many more types of atrocities happens on a daily basis on woman of our society.
I personally believe that if you will avoid the problem it leads a step further towards you. A response is necessary to stop these happenings, every woman thinks or say majority of them feels better to avoid molesters and waits what the time shows them. No one is going to speak for women if women can’t speak for her own. If we are looking solution for all these atrocities, ‘a response’ may be the first to start with. If we look the name ‘Women’ it might sound normal but if we give a literary eye on this term we might get some actual meaningful words, Women stands for – “Woods of optimistic module with empowered neuhiet (newness)”, But may be woman are forgetting their optimistic approach towards every problem and suppressing themselves because this male dominant society has replaced the module word with molestation. For a solution woman need to learn first. Some will think that education might be the best way to get rid of atrocities on women. But learning is not about reading or writing it’s also about learning from experiences and further reacting on it with one’s educational & constitutional rights. History is repeating itself, like if we look back in 1920s in India when ‘Parda systems’ were active and now when we see molesters abusing and commenting on dresses of woman, we see some similarities saying that this dominance of men wants the history to repeat itself. Woman needs to fight for it; I would rather say woman who fight for her own are a hero but who fights for her are much more than that. Men need to change their mindset and this stereotype mentality too.
Now comes the most important change for a solution. A system is all we live in; it is the all in all of a society. Our basic norms are based on it but some rules we build for our own convenience and safety and that are the norms which might be suitable for any kind of atrocities on woman. System needs to interfere in any such norms which are building or built for some male dominance purpose and yes it has to be strict.
“It is difficult to start a motion than to maintain it”. At least woman in every country from top to the bottom needs to understand the fact that a crime is crime, it could be in different shades, and it could be happen by your intimate partner, by your own family, it could start from some saying and comments but can end brutally if woman won’t speak.
Yes definitely our education system needs a permanent and practical sexual education for all so that men can understand the sexuality and its importance and the psychological disturbances they get from looking it on the adult sites. It needs to be strictly prohibited. Somehow boys in their young age changes their mentality by looking into these porn/adult sites. If you want a change, change starts with you first. Start listening, start reacting and now the time to stop the discrimination between men and woman. So then there might be one day when we will be discussing about the true empowerment of women in our society rather than atrocities.
